Summary
A mecha film held back by weak acting and writing. That dumbs out important character development and world building elements (and pacifist messages, I might add) more pronounced in the original series while slightly improving on some side things, most notably the Gundam now not being made of three separable parts and the way the Gundam descends into the atmosphere.
